Sy: Llévanos al tiempo cuando comenzaste como técnico de captura de movimiento de videojuegos - sientes que esa experiencia le ha brincado a tu arte ahora en la música?
Jas: Sí, quiero crear una experiencia interactiva, más que todo cuando toco en vivo. Siento que soy más un creador en la oscuridad, ajá que un ‘’performer " .Quisiera crear experiencias enteras. En “Concordia” mi primer proyecto interactivo ocupaba añadir audio y pues esto me llevó a bajar la aplicación Ableton y así fue como comencé a disfrutar la creación de sonido. Y así ya tengo 3 años estudiando música esto me ha dado la capacidad de hacer lo que me dé la gana. Quiero tomarme un tiempo para combinar todo esto dentro de mi música y presentaciones.
Sy: ósea tú comenzaste a producir música solo desde tu proyecto en “Concordia”?
Jas: Si. Hice algo de música antes cuando estuve en Colombia, solía tocar algunos instrumentos. De hecho cuando estaba chiquitx comencé a silbar antes de hablar. Cuando tenía 12 años descarge el programa “ virtual Dj” Comencé a pinchar porque quería acostumbrarme a tocar con una audiencia
Sy: Ookay! En tres años? ¡Impresionante! Puedo imaginar que chorro de trabajo, dedicación , aprendizaje y desempeño has puesto en práctica para llegar a donde estás ahora. Increíble tu enfoque y disciplina
Jas: Hay. Gracias! gracias. Pero también creo que mi trabajo me permite hacer esto. El hecho de que puedo trabajar con UBIs, seis meses intermitentes para dedicar tiempo a mi música. Ha sido muy útil para mi crecimiento.
Sy: S: Bueno, un saludo para ellos. Tu nuevo álbum RW, (Rainbow Warrior) lanzado en septiembre de 2022, si tuviera que describir el álbum si fuera un videojuego . ¿Qué video fuego sería ?
Jas: huy!? Hay un app videojuego que…espera voy a checar el nombre. Es un personaje que vaga en las calles y vuela hacia el espacio y experimenta. Mi hermano me lo enseño. Bien soñador que vuela y vuela.
Se llama “Cielo” : Niños de la Luz”
Pienso que el entorno es principalmente con lo que me identifico (Rainbow Warrior). Si me gustaría hacer mi propio videojuego para Rainbow Warrior. Creo que Rainbow Warrior va a ser un proyecto continuó. Quiero mucho crear personajes y hasta hacer presentaciones dentro de un video juego. Creo que Travis Scott hizo algo así durante la pandemia para “Fortnight”? Así de pronto saltando dentro del videojuego en vivo. Así puedes agrupar a millones de personas con la simplicidad de iniciar sesión en sus dispositivos
Sy: en tu entrevista más reciente, hablaste sobre la dualidad del “Ángel de la oscuridad”. Hablaste sobre la luz y la oscuridad, el Ying y el Yang. Que viene del espíritu de tu amigo que falleció. ¿Te acuerdas?
Jas: Sí
Sy: De qué modo su espíritu te guió en encontrar el balance entre la oscuridad y la luz y cómo ese proceso influyó tu música?
Jas: Creativamente siento que me ayudo mucho y emocionalmente en mis relaciones. Me ayudado a entender a las personas, sabes cuando la gente hace algo que no es bueno. Mi novia me ha estado hablando del ‘’anti héroe’’ El antihéroe puede ser un personaje que no es un héroe pero al final de la historia se convierte en uno. Aunque el o ella hagan algo malo sus intenciones son de conservar algo. Asi como aqui en Latinoamerica , sabes? Cuando tratan de empujar una empresa o grupos de personas para preservar lo que ha sido robado en el pasado, ¿sabes?[a]
Sy: Si pienso que es importante y hermoso que eres consciente de dónde vienen las cosas y por que son así. El ser, la reflexión y la influencia que tu entorno y tu experiencias vividas. Hablar de esto ayuda a tus escuchas entender el contexto.
Jas: Si, realmente quiero hablar sobre esto. De hecho si pensé acerca de esto. Algunas de mis canciones que voy a sacar, alguna gente me dice que son muy duras. Es un hecho que me han dicho ‘’Verga’’ esta pesado. Siento que a veces hábito en el cuerpo del depredador (la persona que está siendo el mal) y en otras letras hábito en la persona que está viviendo la situación. En el futuro quiero hablar más de esto, porque también enseña cómo mi generación ya no aguanta, sabes?[b]
Sy: Absolutamente
Jas: Porque siento que mi dualidad dentro de mí puede ser violenta. Ya puedes crecí en Canadá, tu sabes que hay que ser muy correcto. Estar alla de refugiado, tratar de encajar y se no ser muy ruidoso. Y tu ya tienes una idea errónea de quien eres y esta en tu cabeza, sabes? Lo siento mucho cuando me peleo con mis papas, mis parejas, pero es realmente a través de la música es cuando lo entiendo bien[c]
Sy: Hablemos del arte de tu portada. Sera que sabes que es ‘’Cowboy Bebop’’? Me recuerda esto, energéticamente. Creo por el sombrero de vaquero y los elementos futuristas. ¿Cuál fue tu inspiración?
Jas: Vi un poster japonés, de ahí viene mi inspiración, así como un ‘’Flyer’’. Cuando era más joven yo dibujaba mucho porque fui a la escuela de bellas artes por un año. Me enfoque en realismo, sabes cuando hay un modelo y dibujas?
Sy: mhm
Jas: El ojo. Es algo que dibujaba mucho. Solía dibujar ojos y mi papá me decía que tenía una fascinación por los ojos. Por eso lo puse atrás. Para mi significa ‘’Conciencia”
También estoy yo y el pequeño robot. Es un dibujo modelo 3D que hice ya hace un tiempo atrás. Quiero que esté siempre en mis proyectos. Ya pues el cable es representativo de mi saliendome de la Matriz. Mi papá es un físico cuántico. Me ha enseñado mucho sobre eso sabes de la mente y la realidad.
Por eso es que me gustan muchos los videojuegos. Es como lo que vivimos cuando vamos a la escuela ¿sabes?Mi papa si cree en la matriz. Me dice el que en la biblia, ponen a Adam a dormir y realmente él nunca se despierta. Ni se menciona que si se llego a despertar. Pues entonces puede ser una metáfora de estar en un sueño infantil. ¿Qué significa vivir dentro de un sueño? Cuando estás soñando puedes hacer lo que sea, ¿ sabes? En tus sueños puedes ser todos los personajes. Digamos que estás en una tienda y alguien se te acerca a hablar o si alguien te empuja. Realmente eres tu empujandote. Entonces imagínate si la realidad es algo así? Cómo transformar la realidad física, lo que tú percibes y en la forma que actuas te pone en un lugar especial.[d]
Ahorita estoy en Mexico y estoy interactuando con este tipo de amigos y haciendo música por que yo decidi estar aqui. Así que si algo pasa es por que yo escogí esta situación y es una reacción de donde me encuentro por que puedo estar en cualquier otro lado sabes? Así que es como quebrar salirme de la matriz, vivir libre y tener más poder. El el arte de la portada se muestra en mi mano derecha rompiendo los cables
Sy: Es un viaje que estemos hablando de esto. Literalmente antes de llamarte, estaba meditando y me encontré con un perfil en Insta que habla acerca del sanar y la existencia de la matriz y como hay códigos que nosotros podemos recitar en nuestro cerebro para cambiar la realidad de turno. Por ejemplo, digamos que quieres salir de la matriz, entonces tendrás que recitar repetidamente el código 0 0 1, 0 1, 1 0. Es increíble que estemos aquí. En círculo completado. Hermosa la sincronización. Estoy muy agradecido de hablar contigo.

The Rainbow Warrior: JASHIM
Sy: Take us back to how it started - as a motion capture tech in gaming does your experience cross over to your artistry in music.
Jashim: Yeah, I really want to create interactive experiences, mostly for performances. ‘Cause I think I'm more of a creator than a performer. During my first production with a project at Concordia, an interactive experience that I was a part of. I needed some sound for it so then I downloaded Ableton, and that's where I really enjoyed making sounds. Since I’ve been learning music for three years now I'm more capable of doing what I want. I wanna take some time to combine these types of projects together within my music and performances.
S: You've only been producing since the project at Concordia?
J: Yeah. I did some music before when I was in Colombia, I used to play some instruments and I used to download a virtual DJ to play around. I started DJing ‘cause I wanted to get used to performing and be around the public.
S: Wow. So all within three years. That's impressive. I can imagine how much work and dedication you've put into practicing and learning and performing to get to where you are at now. That takes focus and discipline.
J: Thank you, thank you. But I also think my job lets me do that. The fact that I can work with UBIs, six months on and off to dedicate time towards my music. It has been really helpful for my growth.
S: Well shout out to them. Your new album RW, (Rainbow Warrior) released September 2022, If you were to describe the album as a video game. Which game(s) would it be?
J: Oh my God. There's a game, an app, wait, I'm gonna check what the name is. It's like a little wanderer who kind of flies into, into space and just experiments. My brother showed it to me. It's super dreamy and it's just like a person that flies around.
It's called Sky: Children of the Light. I think that the environment is mostly what I relate to (Rainbow Warrior). I would like to do my own game actually for Rainbow Warriors. I think Rainbow Warriors is gonna be a continuous project. I really wanna create characters and I would even like to do a show in a game. I think Travis Scott did that during the pandemic. Like Fortnight. And he hopped on a virtual performance in the game. So you have millions of people that can come because they can just sign on with their devices.
Sy: In your most recent interview you spoke about the duality of a Dark Angel, you spoke about embodying the light and the dark, the ying and the yang, and that it coming from the spirit of your best friend who passed. Do you recall?
J: Yeah
Sy: In what ways has their spirit guided you to bring that balance of dark and light, and how has it informed your process of your music?
J: Creatively, I think it has helped me a lot, and emotionally with my relationships; just to be able to understand people, you know, when people do stuff and it's not, it's not bad sometimes. My girlfriend was talking to me about the “anti-hero” which is a character that is not a hero but finishes by being a hero by the end of the story. Even if he or she does “bad” stuff their main reason is to save something or to preserve something. Like here in Latin America, you know, where they try to push some companies away or some people away just to preserve what has been stolen in the past, you know?
I think the duality of the dark angel reflects more in my lyrics. I realize I have a lot of violent lyrics and some people sometimes have listened to it and be like: “whoa, why are you even saying that?”
I think I'm trying to accept that it's just something that has been put in my brain because I grew up in a country that was at war, with me and my family, and seeing military forces for months. Sometimes it is mostly what I heard when I was a kid. Like I've said that in some lyrics. I say, “now I'm gonna kill you. I'm gonna kill it” But then after that, I had time to think, and realized I can't say that in my lyrics. It's not that I'm gonna do it, but I think it's a reflection of my unconscious. ‘Cause when you rap, it's mostly unconscious. When you freestyle, it's mostly your unconscious that talks. I think maybe I'm gonna be criticized because I'm saying stuff like that. But then I think I could also talk about why I'm certain things in my music.
Sy: Yeah, I think it's important to - it's beautiful that you are mindful of where it all comes from and why - that It being a reflection and influence of your environment and your lived experiences — to speak upon that helps give your listeners / fans context.
R: Yeah, I really wanna speak about that. Actually, I thought about it like I got some songs that my lyrics are really hard that I'm gonna release, and I thought about the fact that some people have told me, “whoa, that's like, that's heavy”. I think sometimes I embody the predator - the person that is doing wrong. And then in other songs, I embody the person that is living the situation. At some point I wanna talk about it ’cause it is also showing what my generation has been fed up with, you know?
S: Yeah, absolutely.
J: Cause I think that's mostly my duality that something inside me that is really violent. But then the rest of my life, I grew up in Canada where you have to be really correct. You're there as a refugee, so you have to fit in and not be too loud, ‘cause you already have a misconception of you … but then, it's still in my brain, you know? And I’ve felt it sometimes when I got into fights with my parents, with my partners, but it's really through music that I really understood that well.
S: I wanna get into the cover art. I don't know if you know Cowboy Bebop, it sorta of reminds me of that - energetically. I think it's the cowboy hat and the futuristic elements. What was the inspiration behind it?
J: I saw some Japanese posters. That was really my inspiration; like for the way I put it, the drawing into a flier. I always used to draw because when I was younger, I went to fine arts Academy, for about a year. I used to do realistic things - you know when there's a model in front of you and then you draw?
Sy: mhm
J: The eye. That was something that I used to draw a lot. I used to draw eyes and my dad used to tell me, that I have a fascination with eyes. So I put the eye in the back, for me it is “consciousness”.
There's me and then there's this little robot, a 3D drawing model I did a while ago. I really want that in my projects all the time. Then the cable is representative of me breaking out of the Matrix. My dad is a quantum physician. And he taught me a lot about all of that, and you know, the mind and the reality.
That's why I think I love video games too, ‘Cause it's kind of like what we're living in my school, you know? Yeah. And he really believed in the Matrix. He even says that in the Bible, uh, you know, when they put Adam to sleep, Adam never really wakes up and it isn’t mentioned that he wakes up afterwards. So that could be a metaphor about living in a child’s dream. So what does it mean to live in a dream? When you're in a dream, you can do mostly do whatever you do, you know? In your dreams you are every character. Let's say you're in a store and then someone comes to talk to you or someone pushes you. It’s actually you pushing yourself. What if reality can kind of be like that? How you transform it in this physical reality, what you perceive and how you act will put you in a special place.
I'm in Mexico and I'm interacting with these kinds of friends and I'm doing music because I put it myself in this. So if something happens, I actually put myself in this situation, and it's a reaction to where I am because I could be wherever I want to be. You know? So that's kind of breaking out of the Matrix; to live freely, and have more power. As depicted in the cover art, in my right hand I broke the cables.
Sy: It's kind of trippy, that we're getting into this because literally before I got on the call with you, I was doing some mediations and stuff and I stumbled across an I.G account that talks about healing and exiting “The Matrix”; and how that there are codes that we can recite to compute in our brains to shifts realities. And so the codes are in series of numbers. For example, let's say you want to exit the Matrix, you would have to repeat the code 0 0 1, 0 1, 1 0. Insane how we got here. This is bringing us to a full circle moment. The synchronicity of it is absolutely beautiful, and I am super grateful for us chatting. This is an affirmation of where we are at.
